The Letter that Leapt Through Time: A Fateful Choice

Friday, September 26, 2008

Hello my friend

Just here to give you a little insight into what courses to choose when you start university. Choosing what courses to do is always hard and difficult for two reasons. The first is that choosing ones courses can greatly affect ones future and secondly there are so many exciting courses to choose from. I went for the courses which concerned subjects that I am interested in and ones that I was curious to see what they were like.

However my advice is to go to all the lectures during O-Week. They introduce you to some of the lecturers and give you a great understanding of the subject. I picked most of my course after attending the lectures during O-Week. Also once you have picked a subject don’t be afraid of using the two week trail window period for changing courses. Rather change a course early on than be enslaved into something you hate for half or even a full year. I have seen it happen first hand and there is nothing worse than having to do something that is challenging and boring at the same time.

Also remember that in the second semester or even second year you might have to pick more or different courses. So to avoid going through the long process again I will give you a little more advice. During your time at university try going to some of your friends lectures. You will be able to get a first hand experience at what the other courses are like. Then you can accurately choose what subjects you want to take. It is also a great way to meet new people and make new friends, which is always hard when first starting at university.

Wishing you good luck your friend

Chris

Hi Chris

I'm really glad that you decided to advise your younger self about subject choices. In my opinion, choosing subjects as a naive newbie was one most stressful things that I'd ever had to do especially as I too was aware that the choices I made would influence the rest of my life. I also feel that attending the all the introductory lectures during O-week is really important in terms of subject choice. Though sometimes, I still find myself wondering whether I made the right choices - it’s strange to think that even though I had reservations about university, I had my whole life figured out before I came here and yet now that I’m here, I’m more confused than ever! Nevertheless, I haven’t let this get me and hope that future Chris also doesn’t let anything get him down, for university is truly one of the most amazing periods of your life.

Best wishes for the next few years! I hope you find being at Rhodes and finding yourself, just as or if not more fulfilling than I do!

Hi Chris

During ‘O- Week’ I was one of those overly eager first years that went to every single lecture which caught my attention. Well, that and the fact that my mom was here, breathing down my neck and guilt tripping me into going to every single lecture to get ‘a feeling’ of what the lectures were going to be like when university finally started.

Well, I should have known that no matter how fun and interesting the
lectures were during ‘O-Week’, they were just a sneaky trick to get
naïve students to join particular courses. I happened to be one of
those gullible students who got sucked into this devious trap and I
have regretted taking a particular subject which I’m not going to
mention. You never know, my Geography lecturers could stumble upon this blog and might get a bit tense if they read this. Whoops, I think I just spilt the beans. ;)

However everything happens for a reason, because I met someone who has turned out to be one of the greatest friends I have ever had. So, I guess that although I have not exactly enjoyed one of my subjects
(which is supposed to remain nameless), I met Christina, which is
definitely one of the highlights of the year for me.
